The Quick Start Guide to VOIP for the Home, Home Office, and Small Business

Save Money on Your Phone Bill Using the Latest Free Internet Phones

If you are looking for a way to save a little money on your phone bill, look into a free Internet phone.

Free Internet phones enable you to make no-charge long distance calls in return for watching advertisements the phone provider may run on the service.

If you aren't too fussy, this may not be too high a price to pay given the fact that the voice quality is usually good and the lag is not too bad.

There are three categories of free VOIP phone service being offered. These are:

1. Computer-to-Computer Service

This Internet phone service allows you to make free phone calls from one computer to another. All you need is a computer with a broadband connection, and telephony software. You download this software from many places on the Net for free.

This service requires two computers loaded with the right software, connected to the Internet which limits whom you can call. However, it's a good option because many companies have stopped offering free computer to phone services.

The voice quality that is offered by free Internet phones is reasonably good. However, it cannot be compared with the voice quality of a conventional phone.

2. Computer-to-Phone Service

This service enables you to use your computer to call any landline phone. To use this service, you need a computer with a sound card, a microphone and speakers or headphones. A full duplex card allows you to speak and listen at the same time. Headphones are easier to use, because speakers can cause an echo.

This is not an easy service to run, and many service providers have been forced to close shop, or have changed their product offerings.

At the time of writing, one VOIP broadband phone provider offering free computer-to-phone calls is Voipbuster.com. You have to download their VOIP software which you use to make calls from your computer. Calls to other Voipbuster customers are free, as well as calls to landline phones in the following free destinations: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan.

2. Phone-to-Phone Service

This type of free Internet service allows you to make calls from your phone to any other phone. To get this service, you have to log on to websites, and sign up for partner services which may push advertising to your mail. A big advantage is that you don't need to have a computer. The sound quality is very good and the service is very easy to use.

Unfortunately, this type of free service may have already gone the way of the dinosaur. At the time of writing, companies such as extremevoice.com and speak4free.com are no longer offering this service.
