The Quick Start Guide to VOIP for the Home

Voip.com Review

With 3 kinds of unlimited long distance plans, FREE Softphone and lots of free features, VOIP.com is a great choice for the home or home office.

Voip.com is a national broadband telephone service that delivers VOIP internet telephone in all US area codes. Unlike its competitors, SunRocket, Vonage, and others, the Voip.com approach to internet telephone service is without massive TV, print and radio campaigns.

What we noticed just from their web site is an effort to focus on core services instead of trendy marketing spiel.

To encourage you to try their service and see for yourself, Voip.com has a 30-day trial. If, after 30 days you don't like it, you can return the equipment for a refund.

Voip.com also has another free service worth checking out. Make a Call lets you dial someone, phone to phone, right from their website. If you dial another Make a Call registered user, the call is free. If you dial a landline or mobile number, you pay with pre-paid credits (much like how Skype call out service works). To start, you get a 12-cent credit, about a 6-minutes worth, to call any number. Try it!

Other highlights of Voip.com service that set it apart are:

  • 200 minutes anywhere in North America for $9.95 a month
  • Unlimited long distance to any destination North America for under $20 a month
  • Free softphone for making and receiving calls from your computer. Vonage, SunRocket, and Verizon charge extra for this service.
  • 30 free features.

Free Features

Voip.com has the longest list of free features, (around 30), but in our mind a couple of the best ones are:

  • Softphone: included free with any of the residential service plans (unlimited monthly, yearly, and 200 minutes per month). Lets you make and receive calls on your PC. With Vonage and SunRocket and Verizon, Softphone is a paid premium service. Just plug your PC headset into your laptop or computer and click to call from your list of contacts or dial with an onscreen telephone key pad.
  • Voicemail: View, sort, download messages, receive notifications by phone, email, pager
  • Caller ID: Allows you to see who is calling before you even pick up the telephone. Caller ID with Name delivers the name and number of the caller directly to the display of your Caller ID enabled telephone or device.
  • Call Forwarding: Allows you to automatically redirect your incoming calls to a different phone number.
